Weed Categories in Saskatchewan
Understanding how Saskatchewan classifies invasive and problematic plants helps determine how they should be managed. The Government of Saskatchewan uses three main categories: Prohibited, Noxious, and Nuisance.
Prohibited
These species are absent or extremely rare in Saskatchewan, but pose a serious threat if introduced. They have demonstrated aggressive, invasive behavior elsewhere. The goal is complete prevention, any suspected sightings must be reported immediately so they can be eradicated before establishing.

Noxious
These weeds are already established in parts of Saskatchewan and are beyond practical eradication, but they continue to spread into areas that are not yet infested. The enforcement goal is to stop or slow their spread through active management and monitoring.
Nuisance Weeds
Nuisance weeds are common and widespread across Saskatchewan. Although they may include some native species, they can still create problems for agriculture and land management due to their ability to spread quickly. The enforcement goal is to reduce infestations to a level consistent with surrounding areas using integrated management practices.
